Google discontinues Google Maps project “Here”

For some time now, Google has been working on a way to take advantage of the retail stores that are on Google Maps to display offers and rewards using users’ locations.

The most recent project, which was known internally as “Google Here”, was abruptly canceled after fears that the new functionality could be considered invasive.

Google Here would act as a notification on the lock screen after the user enters a partner store like Starbucks.

“Sources familiar with the project said that Google was concerned that the service could be seen as invasive and there was also uncertainty in retailers’ interest, leading Alphabet CEO Larry Page to discontinue it,” Forbes reported.
