Google today announced a new feature on Google Maps that allows you to explore world sights through a set that photos in 3D.
The Mountain View giant also said that more than 15,000 points have already been compiled and are available for immediate viewing by users.
“To produce these photographic tours, we used advanced computer vision techniques to create a 3D experience for the public, using photos from Picasa and Panaromio”, mentions the company.
“We started by finding sets of photos overlaid around major landmarks. From them, our system derives the 3D shape of each landmark and calculates the location and orientation of each photo on Google Maps ”.
Google also says that each photo is attributed to its collaborator, and the more people share their content in public (on Picasa or Panorâmio), the bigger and better the tours can get.
