Google informs that by 2021, all Android applications must have 64-bit versions.
64-bit processors offer several advantages over 32-bit architecture, but it seems that not every developer aims to create 64-bit verse applications. This forced the Google giving the ultimatum. Calm that not all this fuss that some see making.
This Tuesday, January 15, Vlad Radu, product manager at Google, announced on the Android developer blog, the company's plans for the future of Android regarding the processor architecture of the applications.
The intention is that processors in such an architecture will take better advantage when running 64 bit apps. Currently, not all applications have their 64-bit variant, limiting a 64-bit smartphone by requiring handsets to use 32-bit versions, and therefore not exceeding maximum performance as designed.
The end of 32 bits? To be?
With the pronouncement, some doubts remained in the air. In what the note by the manager of the Google was confusing, on the contrary, but some technology portals reported that it would be the end of 32-bit applications in Play Store.
To whom does this requirement apply?
Google's proposal that on August 1, 2021, the Play Store will stop supporting 32-bit for devices that support 64-bit. This does not mean that smartphones with 32-bit processors are affected. 32-bit apps will not end, only owners of devices with 64-bit support will get the most out of their gadgets. Because there will be versions of appropriate apps, not requiring 32 bits.
If this transition is successful, people will probably not notice any difference regarding the availability of Apps, although they may experience better performance in some, which is a good thing, no doubt.
With some exceptions, such as games made in Unity 5.6 in 32 bits, by the time of 2021, can keep their 32-bit versions without the need for a 64-bit.
Targeted Applications to Wear os, Android TV, or packages not intended for users of Android 9 Pie or later, will not fit this requirement either.
A perfectly possible task
For most Android developers the change is relatively simple. Since the languages that dominate Android app development are Java and Kotlin, they don't need code changes to support both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
Google is hoping for technologies of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more immersive mobile devices. 64-bit support prepares the entire ecosystem for such innovations, allowing for new advanced features.
Just like us desktops, the next step is to leave the 32-bit era behind us. smartphones.
