Google has announced a change in the display system for its email service, Gmail.
Today, if you open a message that, for example, has a confirmation of hosting at a Chicago hotel, Gmail may show you ads for Chicago.
But there are not always relevant ads for the message content. Imagine that you received an email congratulating you on your birthday. With no birthday related ads, Gmail will be able to show you ads from you to Chicago. In this case, ads related to the last email opened by you.
According to Google, the process for displaying ads is fully automated: no person is involved in selecting ads, and no email or personal information is shared with advertisers.
