Gartner says smartphone sales will outpace notebooks later this year

Today, Gartner released a new survey that reveals two very interesting aspects: the first one, which, according to her, sales of smartphones will leave behind notebook sales later this year. This is exactly what leads us to the second aspect: by the end of 2009, “all (sic) PC manufacturers will also operate in the smartphone segment ”.

According to data from Gartner, smartphones today comprise 14% of all sales of mobile devices, and will reach 37% of all handsets sold in the world in 2012. By then, smartphone sales reach US $ 191 million, much more than the US $ 152 million foreseen in the commercialization of PCs. Currently, the growth rate of this market is 29% year after year, so it forecasts that 2009 will close with a total of 180 million units sold.

“PC manufacturers must understand that, although the convergence of technologies offers an opportunity to enter the smartphone arena, business models, market penetration and product positioning are very different from the PC segment,” said Roberta Cozza, chief analyst at research at Gartner, referring to the difficulties these companies will face in such new ventures.

In view of this and other aspects, Gartner does not foresee that the market share of any PC manufacturer reaches or exceeds 2% in the smartphone market for at least the next three years. Apple, of course, has already surpassed 13%.
