Gartner predicts modest PC growth in 2012, at around 4.4%

The research firm Gartner published today a survey that points to a worldwide growth of 4.4% in PCs in 2012, totaling 368 million units. By the end of 2013, the market will be able to reach the 400 million mark.

The forecast is still positive (not least because in 2011 the growth was a mere 0.5%), but it could be higher and it can be explained, of course, by the proliferation of tablets and smartphones, which replace conventional computers for many people .

Just to get an idea, in yesterday's keynote, Apple CEO Tim Cook pointed out that the 15.4 million iPads sold in the last quarter exceeded total PC sales from any manufacturer. The closest was Hewlett-Packard (HP), with 15.1 million.
