Gartner and IDC: in the United States, Apple maintained the third position among the largest PC manufacturers

Research firms Gartner and IDC have just released their recent studies (1, 2) on the PC market for the first quarter of 2012 (see previous: 1, 2).

Gartner data shows that Apple maintained the third position among the largest manufacturers in the United States, selling 1.6 million Macs 3.8% more than in Q1 2011. The number represents 10.6% of the market, an increase 0.8 percentage point.

The leadership continued with HP (29% market share), which sold 4.4 million units, 6.6% more year on year. Dell (22.3%), Acer (9.1%) and Toshiba (8.7%) had lower numbers than in the first quarter of 2011, however, Acer stole Toshiba's fourth place in the USA. In all, 15.5 million machines were sold, 3.5% less year on year.

Overall, the scenario has not changed much from the last survey. Apple remains out of Top 5, which presented the following order: HP (17.2%), Lenovo (13.1%), Dell (11%), Acer Group (10.9%) and ASUS (6%). In total, 88.9 million PCs were sold, 1.9% more than the same period in 2011.

Although similar, the IDC data describe a slightly different scenario: Apple maintained its third position in the USA, rising 0.4 percentage points and reaching 10% of market share; it sold 1.6 million Macs, 5.1% more than in Q1 2011. HP maintained its leadership, with 28%, followed by Dell (21.7%). Here, Toshiba remains in fourth position, with 8.1% of the market, while Acer grabbed 7.8% with the exception of Apple and HP, all of which lost market share. In all, 16.5 million computers were sold, 1% more than in Q1 2011.

The world table presented the following order: HP (18%), Lenovo (13.4%), Dell (11.6%), Acer Group (9.9%) and ASUS (6%). 87.1 million machines were sold, 2.3% more year on year.
