Installing a custom ROM offers many advantages, switching UI if you are not satisfied, for example. The process, however, requires measures such as excluding native Google apps. With an app like Gapps Manager you can automatically find the most suitable version of the so-called Gapps for your device's new ROM.
Google Apps (also known as Gapps) is a suite of important programs and services like the Play Store, Gmail, and Google Calendar. Few custom ROMs install these applications automatically. As a rule, Gapps need to be flashed after ROM.
Gapps Manager takes care of finding the right app package for your ROM, and works from Android Gingerbread. The corresponding file will be downloaded to your device, but you will need to flash the package yourself. The following versions are currently supported:
- 2.3.x – Gingerbread
- 4.0.x – Ice Cream Sandwich
- 4.1.x to 4.3.x – Jelly Bean
- 4.4.x – KitKat
The app also lists packages that are compatible with the new ART environment. Click here for a comparison of major custom ROMs and here to find out if you need one.
