If you've ever had one iGadget “Old” and recently acquired an iPad (fourth generation / Air), an iPad mini (any generation), an iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s or an iPod touch (fifth generation), will agree with me: great to be able to take the Lightning cable and regardless of orientation, stick it on the device. Many priests unfortunately do not follow this ease of use, including the most famous of them, the USB (Universal Serial Bus). Fortunately, that should change in mid-2014.
According to a release (PDF) of the USB 3.0 promoter group (USB 3.0 Promoter Group), work on the next generation of the connectivity standard has started. According to the group, the new USB connector (Type-C) is being built based on the technologies of the current USB 3.1 and 2.0, but it allows manufacturers to develop thinner and lighter devices / accessories, improving usability and promoting good performance improvements.
The highlights of this new standard include a new design (smaller, similar to the Micro-B), use in any orientation, possibility to recharge devices, among other things.
The annoying part of this story is that the new connector will not be backwards compatible. In other words, all its accessories that use USB ports * will not * be compatible with the future standard, the same thing we saw with the arrival of Lightning, which replaced the 30-pin connector; but most likely there will be adapters so that compatibility is not lost.
From time to time, leaps like this are necessary for things to continue to evolve.
