Future of the Internet at risk?

Already several entities have come to warn of the need to migrate to version 6 of the Internet protocol and Vinton Cerf, considered one of the fathers of the great network, is more of a concordant voice. The researcher argues that the move to IPv6 must be taken seriously and must be immediate, before the Internet collapses.

Experts have said for some time that the current address system (IPv4) will not be able to respond to the growth of the Internet from 2012, when it will have reached its little more than 4 billion available addresses.

Version 6 of the Internet protocol will allow the creation of an almost unlimited addressing system, but the process of adhering to the standard is proving to be too slow in view of the level of growth of requests, given the increasing number of devices connected to the large network. .

«At this point, the network will be unstable, so it is so necessary to immediately start migrating to the new address scheme. Either we change or the Internet stops growing and will not be scalable,» said Vinton Cerf, quoted by the BBC.

The big problem with migrating from one protocol to another is that they are not compatible, that is, as «parts» of the Internet are converted to IPv6, users still on IPv4 may not be able to access the site, resource or service they want.

«The network will not stop working during the move, but access can be ‘uneven’». This instability may continue over time, suggested the expert, pointing to Google – the company he currently works for – as an example, referring that the search giant took three years to implement its IPv6 network.

Currently, only about one percent of Internet traffic is sent over IPv6. Some countries, such as China and the Czech Republic, have already made great strides in using the standard, but others have not even started yet, accuses Vinton Cerf, adding that the change to the protocol must be a world priority.
