Fujitsu and Toshiba may merge

Fujitsu and Toshiba conclude merger on mobile phones

Fujitsu and Toshiba are in negotiations to merge their mobile phone business areas, guarantee several international media.

The rumor has been filling the pages of the specialized press in recent days, based on information from a «source close to the negotiation», who would have preferred to remain anonymous because it is not yet an «official agreement».

If the partnership of the two technologies is confirmed, we will be faced with the creation of the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in Japan, which will allow companies to strengthen their position in the market and share the costs associated with the development of innovation in this area.

According to the advanced information, the manufacturers’ strategy should include the creation of a joint company, in which Fujitsu should hold a majority stake.

The companies have not confirmed, however, the intention to merge. A spokesman for Fujitsu said that nothing had yet been decided, but he also did not rule out the possibility. Toshiba also said it had no decision to communicate and declined to comment.

The alleged merger is yet another attempt by the competition to challenge the dominance of Nokia and Samsung, and recently also NEC, Hitachi and Casio announced the merger of their mobile phone business areas.
