Months after analyzing and classifying the rear cameras of the iPhone 11 Pro Max – and days after the iPhone 11 -, the DXOMARK released its opinion on the frontal camera the top-of-the-line Apple model. Although the result was not what many speculated, it was enough to put the device on Top 10.
Before going deeper into the tests, it is worth remembering that the front camera of the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 3D SL sensor with 12MP resolution and an aperture equivalent to a 23mm lens (Ć’ / 2.2). In addition, the new flagship it has a sensor on the front camera capable of recording 4K videos at 60 frames per second.
That said, DXOMARK explained that the front camera of the iPhone 11 Pro Max offers a good improvement in image quality over the XS Max, calling the addition of the ultra-agular lens a “great advantage”. In addition to improvements in focus, the company also points out that photos in Portrait Mode are quite effective; at selfies itself were praised, with dynamic range and well-controlled skin tones even in very light conditions.
Without further ado, let’s check out the strengths and weaknesses of the front camera of the iPhone 11 Pro Max, according to DXOMARK:
Exposure and contrast
Similarly to the XS Max, the exposure on the iPhone 11 Pro Max is not as good as that of its main competitors, but it does have some strengths, with an emphasis on the Intelligent HDR, which ensures control of the person / object highlighted in bright light conditions . In the example below, the iPhone maintains good levels of contrast and exposure.
Color
The DXOMARK highlights a “good improvement” in the color of the front camera of the iPhone 11 Pro Max compared to the XS Max, which was just one of the weakest aspects of the previous generation due to flaws in the white balance and skin tones.
In New flagshiphowever, color reproduction is “pleasant in most conditions”, with vivid and well saturated colors, especially outdoors, as you can see in the following images:
Focus
As we said, the front camera focus of the iPhone 11 Pro Max gained one of the best corrections compared to the previous generation thanks to the fixed focus lens, which guarantees reliable performance and good sharpness in the short (30cm) and medium (55cm) range . In this sense, DXOMARK praised the more extensive depth of field, which guarantees “more details over greater distances”.

Noise
DXOMARK insists on the fact that noise is one of the main weaknesses of iPhone cameras, and even though there has been a slight improvement compared to the XS Max, the correction of this feature is much less than that of competing devices. This is seen mainly in low light conditions, with “color or chromatic noise often evident”.

Artifacts
In that regard, the iPhone 11 Pro Max lost a few more points for “visible artifacts and obvious flaws in image quality”. The main problems noticed were the loss of precision (sharpness) in the field and distortions of objects closer to the edges of the image.

Flash
Regarding the flash, DXOMARK stated that Apple continues to make “modest improvements”, still the result of Flash Retina on the iPhone 11 Pro Max does not challenge the best placed in this category. More precisely, color reproduction and exposure are acceptable, but the loss of detail and noise is evident. In addition, the laboratory said that the vignette is noticeable in photos without lighting, only with flash.

It is made bokeh
Here, what was already good, got better. According to DXOMARK, 3D SL camera technology uses infrared light rays to detect depth and map the position of the portrait and the background, hiding details from more distant areas and keeping those closer. In addition, noise uniformity is good; therefore, noise levels are consistent across sharp and artificially blurred areas, and the effect is repetitive – so the same results are achieved in consecutive shots.

videos
As for recording videos, the result of the front camera of the iPhone 11 Pro Max placed the device on Top 5, mainly thanks to the implementation of the 12MP lens capable of recording in 4K (2160p) and HDR in videos, which guarantees a very wide dynamic range in most external conditions. Under controlled conditions, the results are also excellent, with minimal variation during recording.
The focus of the video on the front camera of the flagship it is also one of its strongest points, which is mainly due to the same depth of field noted in photos – that is, the faces are well focused and the details in the background, well defined.
Punctuation
All of which contributed to the iPhone 11 Pro Max reaching 91 points in the final evaluation, placing it in tenth place in the DXOMARK ranking – currently led by Huawei nova 6 5G.

According to the company, there are still “some opportunities for future improvements”; nevertheless, the new flagship remains a solid choice for anyone who is upgrading from previous generations or migrating to Apple for the first time.
More than technical analysis, the purpose of use, ergonomics and practicality are also other issues that attract users to the iPhone – and certainly what maintains a loyal consumer base.
And you, what did you think of the results?
