Free software package for schools downloaded 3,000 times in a week

The Free Software at School package, which will be made available to the school universe again this year, started to be distributed on the 2nd of May. In the first week, 3112 downloads of software which is accessible either through this route or through the 5,000 DVDs produced by the initiative’s partners.

The initiative aims to encourage the use of software free in Portuguese schools, either by the teaching community or in the schools’ administrative and internal functioning. The project is the responsibility of the Directorate-General for Innovation and Curricular Development – DGIDC, of ​​the Ministry of Education, through the mission unit Computers, Networks and Internet at School – CRIE and also has the support of Sun Microsystems Portugal.

The package of software includes 24 free and free applications, covering a wide spectrum of features and general applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets, web browsing netcustomer email, anti-virus, image treatment, multimedia player, chat software, among others.

THE suite in software it can be downloaded directly from the CRIE website or requested, on DVD, by post, through schools. The Free Software DVDs in Schools are also distributed by the Competence Centers, in initiatives promoted by DGIDC and CRIE and by the Regional Directorates of Education.

Figures from the Ministry of Education indicate that in 2007, 10,000 DVDs with software free for the same school universe.
