1. Promote tobacco, cigarettes and alcohol

Instagram will no longer allow digital influencers to promote the consumption of toxic substances, such as tobacco, cigarettes and alcohol. The platform still prevents its users from promoting the use of weapons. Such a measure takes place once the rules of use of the social network prove, in their usage policies, advertisements that infer health risks of those who consume them. The new law also applies to Facebook, the company that owns Instagram.

Some tobacco companies use very famous celebrities to advertise their electronic cigarettes, such as British singer Lilly Allen and actor Rami Malek. However, with the change, the promotion of this type of product will be prohibited, regardless of whether they are branded disclosures or just an organic incentive to use the substance, not sponsored. Failure to comply with the measure may result in punishments, both for companies and for accounts that agree to promote use in their profile.

2. Make announcements without indicating

Advertising products and brands is a common activity on Instagram for celebrities and digital influencers. In order to increase the popularity of the advertised products, companies hire famous names to promote content on their profiles, through posts in the feed or in Stories. However, the social network prohibits accounts that promote the use of clothing, food, shoes, among other items without indicating that it is a paid advertisement.

3. Post nudes or partial nudes

The social network is widely used for the dissemination of professional photos, as in the case of photographers or artistic rehearsals of celebrities, however, the rules of use of the network prevent the sharing of images that have complete or partial nudity. Even for artistic purposes, users who publish "nudes" on the social network of photos are liable to have their content removed, and may even suspend their account in cases of recurrence. In addition to nudity, it is not allowed to post any content that has pornographic acts, whether explicit or not.

4. Buy followers and likes

Apps and platforms promote the sale of followers and likes within Instagram, however such activity violates the terms of use of the social network, in addition to experiments proving that the practice does not guarantee a greater profile popularity among real users. The process takes place through the creation of several fake accounts to increase their number of followers or the capture of real profiles, hijacking those accounts. Automation platforms are still used to generate new followers and likes automatically. The practice is considered illegal on Instagram, since the terms of use of the network prevent access to information in an automated way. When identifying the use of bots, your account can be suspended or deleted.

5. Use other people's content without giving credits

Copyright laws are one of the main norms when dealing with photo sharing, which is the main function of Instagram. The social network is increasingly stiffening its copyright policy on the ownership of images. Whether for personal or professional use, sharing a photo without the authorization of its owner is a crime and punishable. When denounced, the profile that violated the usage rule may have its account suspended, and may even reach the legal scope, in case of denunciation by the right holder. In 2018, accounts of digital influencers like Hugo Gloss and Nana Rude were suspended due to illegal use of images.

6. Post photos in prohibited tourist locations

There are some tourist and famous places where it is forbidden to take photos or record videos, either because they are sacred places, to protect the tourist's identity or by copyright. Due to these prohibitions, users are not allowed to post images on Instagram that are in violation of any law, even though it is a non-social media standard. The interior of the Sistine Chapel and the Taj Mahal, the night lighting of the Eiffel Tower and some Las Vegas casinos are examples of places that cannot have images registered, and may have legal consequences if the rules are violated. Users who are caught sharing such photos may have their content deleted and their account suspended.

Using the network to defame someone, bullying or posting photos of other people without authorization, in order to harass them, prohibited on Instagram. The act contraindicated by the network, whether directed to people who have or not an account within the social network. Due to the high visibility of famous people, the practice of these irregularities can lead to the persecution of thousands of other users of the target person, which may result in measures to be taken legally by the victim. The activity violates the terms of use of the network and the user can be punished with the suspension or even exclusion from the account.
