Flatpak version 1.5.1 may have payment system for apps

Flatpak version 1.5.1 was released on Tuesday (27), containing some very interesting news that may appear in the next updates.

The packaging of sandboxed applications, such as Snap and Flatpak, tends to be the “dominant” formats for the distribution of applications in the Linux world over the next few years. So much so that Microsoft also thinks about having a “universal” package, with support for Linux, MSIX that we reported here on the blog.

The news presented by Flatpak, in my opinion, are making it increasingly attractive for devs to distribute their “product” in this format. I highlight three (3) news of this new release, which are:

  • Preparation of the bases for a future payment system on Flathub, thus making it possible to donate or purchase apps, with Flathub becoming a store in the future;
  • Introduction of the concept of protected applications and authentication for downloads;
  • Optional parental control support, using libmalcontent.

Now in my view, that would be great if it arrived as soon as possible in the next stable versions of Flatpak. This would be an incentive for companies and developers to get even closer to the Linux world, being able to “sell their fish” to almost any distribution that supports Flatpak, thus not worrying too much about which Linux distro it needs to focus on. I welcome these advances and I believe that it will reach Snap too, so we can have applications in Linux in the near future, such as an MS Office, Adobe package, ERPs and so on.
