Flashlight powers the OS X Spotlight through plugins

In the iOS world we depend on jailbreak for hackers / developers to extend the native functions of the operating system, but fortunately OS X (still) quite open in that sense. And projects like the Flashlight, designed by Nate Parrott.

Flashlight

Flashlight promises to become a complete plug-in system for OS X's Spotlight, something that Apple until today has not been interested in offering. The proposal makes an API available for other developers to boost the search system embedded in Ma's desktop operating system.

The thing is moving fast and already brings some examples that give an idea of the possibilities, including weather forecast with animated graphics, more flexible searches on the web, integration with Wolfram | Alpha and more.

Compatible only with OS X Yosemite, Flashlight should still be considered software in stage alpha, but as your code is open and very cool it should become something "usable" very soon. If you are a developer and interested, contribute to the project!
