Photos with vintage effects are a hit on Instagram. Some applications help the user to create images with an 80’s and 90’s aesthetic, simulating photos captured in analog cameras or even with “burned” photo effects, with burst and distorted lighting.

The Huji Cam app simulates an analog camera on the phone’s screen. The photos are captured with high saturation, a common configuration in film cameras, and even apply purposeful flaws in the lighting, which may present yellow or reddish beams in the image. The photographs also show a fake date of capture, initially marking the year 1998, but which can be changed in the application’s settings.

To use the app, the user needs to leave the phone horizontal, as Huji Cam displays a tiny screen on the screen, just as it did with the equipment of the past. Still, it is possible to enlarge the viewfinder for a better view of the photo. To capture an image, just tap the main button. To view the photos with the effects, you need to click on the “Lab” icon.

Another option for capturing photos in this style is the Lomograph application, which has more retro filters that refer to old photographs, with grainy effects and high exposure to light. It is also possible to insert purposeful beams of light that present other shades, leaving the photos bluish, greenish and yellowish.

In this application, the user can apply the effects to photos in the gallery or images taken on the spot. The app also applies fake photo capture dates. To use, the user needs to choose between the options «Camera» or «Photo», to take a photo or use a file from the gallery. Then, just choose from the filters on the bottom menu of the screen.

The older cameras did not have the high definition of the current devices, and presented grainy photos and low image quality. The Grain Cam application applies the grain effect to the photo, simulating outdated photographs, leaving them with a retro style.

To apply the effects, just capture the photos and touch the buttons on the top menu of the screen. You can also choose the level of grain, apply a black and white or sepia filter, and increase or decrease the brightness of the photo.

With the Instants app, you can create a Polaroid photo effect using your phone’s camera or uploading files from the gallery. There are several models to leave the photo in style, with different height and width options, between free and paid items. It is possible to write a text that will be attached to the photo with a font that simulates a handwritten note, making the polaroid even more real. At the end, it is possible to change the color of the frame and apply light effects to save the image on the phone or send to social networks installed on the phone.

The VHS Cam application simulates an old camcorder, which recorded images on VHS tapes. The screen shows the traditional image with faults and drizzles, in addition to the recording data, such as the word “play”, a shooting time counter and the date and time, common items in the images of that time and that can be manually configured for any day, month and year.

To use the app, just click on the “Record” option to create a video, or on the “Photo” button to capture a photo with the effect, simulating a frame from an old video. The app has light, filters and zoom settings.

Instagram itself has native frames that simulate old photos. To access them, it is necessary to choose between the filters when editing the image. Each effect has a different frame, and the Hudson, X-Pro II and Nashvile filters, for example, feature frames that mimic old photos and recordings.
