1. When you open WhatsApp on your phone

WhatsApp does not provide an option to hide «online» status. That way, even if you use the other privacy features, your contacts always know when you’re on WhatsApp. However, it is possible to hide the status with Hide WhatsApp Status, available for Android. The app allows you to be «invisible» on WhatsApp to read messages without being seen.

2. The last time you messed with WhatsApp

The «last seen» is a notice that is next to the name of the contacts in the chat, with the last time the app was accessed by the person. The information can be hidden in the «Privacy» tab, with the option to make it visible to «Everyone», «My contacts» or «Nobody». Note that turning off the feature also prevents you from seeing your contacts’ activity.

3. Your phone number

The identification of contacts in the app works by means of the cell phone number, which is the only way to create a WhatsApp account – unlike social networks that use a username and password. There are several ways to share your account with others, including links and even a QR Code, which is in the testing phase, but it is not possible to hide the number even in groups, which can be a nuisance for certain users.

4. When viewing messages in groups

Read confirmation is a feature that can be disabled in WhatsApp on Android phones and the iPhone. When you do this, the «blue check» will not be shown to your contact when a message from you is read. In return, you also won’t know if your contacts have read what was sent to them in private conversations. However, disabling does not apply to groups, so all senders of the collective conversation can know who read any message sent by them, by tapping «Data».

5. When playing voice messages

Even though the read confirmation is disabled, another feature that cannot be turned off in WhatsApp is the indication that an audio has been played. This is true for private conversations or groups, where you can use the «Data» menu of a message to obtain information. A trick to listen to the voice message without being discovered is to forward the audio to yourself and play the content in the new chat.
