Facebook announced last Thursday (20) that it will pay for the voice recordings of some users through the market research application Viewpoint. The initiative aims to collect data for the improvement of speech recognition techniques and a way to avoid polemics around the use without audio permission from users to improve speech recognition technologies. Initially restricted to the United States, the initiative will yield at least US $ 5 (R $ 22 per day) and requires the user to be over 18 and have more than 75 friends on Facebook to participate in the survey.

Anyone who installs the Viewpoint and joins the Pronounciations program will have to contribute recordings of simple phrases, like Hey Portal, in addition to the first names of up to ten friends. Completing the task, which involves two recordings of each phrase and name, earns the participant 200 points in the app.
The payment system pays users that add up to 1,000 points on the Viewpoint, which are equivalent to US $ 5. As it is possible to contribute more than once, users could make multiple recordings until they add up to the minimum score that, once exchanged, entitles them to a payment made via PayPal.
The Facebook initiative is a way to escape the controversy surrounding the network and other tech giants in 2019. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Google were caught listening to user recordings without permission as a way to improve their speech recognition technologies .
In addition to remunerating the user, Facebook promises that the recordings will not be used outside the Viewpoint app without the user's permission and that data and usage activities in the search tool will not be shared under other products on the network, such as Facebook itself.
