End of season for “American Idol” will be shot remotely with a little help from iPhones

The effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the audiovisual industry can be seen and heard loud and clear: postponed films, suspended soap operas, canceled series, artists doing lives from their own homes … the list goes on.

One of the programs affected by the virus was the reality show of freshmen “American Idol”: four episodes to the end of the season, the series was forced to have its production suspended due to the pandemic, with no prospect of a return. Now, the producers have already come up with the solution to end the competition and deliver the prize to one of the participants – and the plan has a little finger from Apple.

According to deadline, the production of “American Idol” distributed iPhones the contestants and judges of the program; the performances and evaluations will be recorded by Apple smartphones and condensed in the final episodes of the season, which will be shown again next Sunday (4/26).

The report did not specify the types of iPhones sent to the cast, stating only that they are the “newest models” (iPhones 11 Pro [Max], perhaps?). And the production of the series is only praise for the capture capabilities of Apple smartphones: showrunner Trish Kinane went so far as to say that he would not be surprised if the iPhones reached the real studios of “American Idol” coming soon.

We are talking about young people who are really used to iPhone technology; they are familiar with the thing and use the device every day. In the end, we decided that instead of sending them some complicated equipment that would require a camera operator to use, it would be better to stick with the technology they already know. These top-of-the-line iPhones are incredible. I wouldn’t be surprised if we started using iPhones in the studio in the future.

In addition to iPhones, the series’ participants and judges will receive light equipment and special costumes to appear in the final episodes of the season; according to Rob Mills, executive at ABC (broadcaster that shows “American Idol”), Apple is working “side by side” with the broadcaster to carry out the project.

Interesting, isn’t it?
