L in 2016, there was a rumor that the Apple would abandon its line of Wi-Fi routers, the AirPorts. More than a year has passed and we continue to see the cute bases being sold by Ma in its stores.
Quietly, this week Apple started making available an option from another company in its online stores and American physics: o Linksys Velop Mesh Wi-Fi System.
The fact: Apple routers haven't had a hardware update for a long time, like AirPorts Extreme and Time Capsule (since June 2013) and AirPort Express (since June 2012)! Regarding the firmware, the rare updates that appear cover only security improvements, and the AirPort Utility application has not been updated since 2014, that is, even for the iPhone X it is not optimized.
All of these would be indications that Apple could clean up its router line for good, but in response to the 9to5Mac, the company stated that it will continue to offer its own options:
People love our AirPort products and we continue to sell them. Important connectivity at home and we are giving customers one more option than is suitable for larger homes.
As Apple said, this Linksys Wi-Fi system goes well with larger locations, which need a more powerful option than AirPorts. Each unit can extend the network coverage up to 185m, but we need to remember that in the United States here in Brazil, where the walls are brick / concrete, this coverage is certainly more limited.
In stores, the product is being offered in two options: with two units per $ 350 or with three units, for $ 500.
Even though Apple tried to reassure consumers about its AirPort line, it did not make it clear whether it would update the products; is that the beginning of the end for the AirPort line? Or maybe we'll see Ma's new options later? Who dares to bet?
