1. Remove emails from social networks and advertisements

Gmail has, since 2013, an intelligent separation of messages into tabs in the inbox. The Social and Promotions tabs tend to accumulate the greatest amount of junk, with unnecessary updates to your social networks that can be disabled via email alerts and that, at times, you have seen in-app notifications and store offers messages.

Access these tabs, review the most recent emails and, if there is nothing interesting, select everything and delete it at once. It is also possible to select message intervals: click on an item, hold the Shift key, and check the last item in the group to tick in batch.

2. Exit mailing lists

If you receive messages with advertisements and promotions on a regular basis, it is likely that Gmail will be able to prevent this from happening in the future. Open messages of this type and look for the Unsubscribe button, next to the sender's email. If this option is available, Google will request the removal of your address from the mailing list.

3. Get rid of boring senders

There are cases in which Google does not have the power to take your email out of inconvenience automatically, but there is an alternative. When faced with frequent senders, it is possible to create a rule to schedule the automatic deletion of emails sent by them.

Step 1. Mark the message from the unwanted sender, open the Gmail options menu and select Filter messages like this;

Step 3. Check the Delete option and create the filter. From all messages coming from the same person they will be moved to the trash automatically. Later, just create a habit of emptying the trash regularly to not take up unnecessary space in Gmail.

4. Backup and delete bookmarks

Gmail labels are used to categorize important emails related, for example, to projects. When the activity related to the label is over, it is possible to back up messages and delete the content of Gmail to free online storage and make your box cleaner.

Step 1. To backup, access the Google data download tool, check Gmail only and select the Select labels option. Then, select the desired bookmarks and click OK. Finalize the data file with just this information to obtain a backup file that can be consulted offline in the future;

5. Delete old emails

Gmail has a filter shortcut to make it easier to remove old emails only. To find emails received more than five years ago, type older_than: 5y (without quotes) change the numeral to choose another annual deadline. Then, delete all messages that appear in the search results. Do not forget to always check the option "Select all messages that match this search".

6. Delete unimportant emails

Another way to find unimportant messages using an email filter that was received a few days ago but has not yet been read. Type is: unread older_than: 10d (without quotes) in the search bar. The command number represents the minimum number of days the message is in your box.

At the end of the whole procedure, the tendency is that there will be a much smaller volume of emails left in your Gmail. The chance is that there are more important messages than useless ones, but I still need to do one last scan.

Step 1. If you think there is still a majority of unnecessary messages, create an Important label to store the messages you want to keep in your inbox;

Step 2. Move the important items one by one. At the end, delete the residual from the inbox and transfer the emails taken to the label back to get a consolidated list right on the Gmail homepage.

It is also possible to go the other way, if you consider that there are already few messages that should be removed from the main screen. In that case, manually select the items and delete them little by little. In the end, you will only keep the content that matters.

8. Clean the trash and spam folder

Step 1. Finish cleaning by emptying the Gmail trash. Take the opportunity to quickly review the trash folder to make sure that there is nothing important among the last items deleted from the inbox;

Step 2. Then do the same with the spam folder. The caution here must be greater, since some important message may have been accidentally sent there by Gmail itself. The tendency is for important emails that have stopped in spam to get your attention quickly, so you don’t have to browse many days back.
