Discover the speed of your Internet with the new version of SIMET | Browsers

The Internet Traffic Measurement System (SIMET), an instrument that measures Internet speed, has been updated and is more efficient. The online platform evaluates the connection through tests and the performance of downloads and uploads in your data packages, both on your phone and on your PC. The new tool also records the efficiency of each operator on a map, which can be useful to find out which company has the best service in your region.

SIMET was developed by the Ponto BR Information and Coordination Center (NIC.br), responsible for coordinating the registration and Brazilian domain names.

To access the tool, just enter the website (beta.simet.nic.br) and click on the Measure button in the center of the interface. SIMET makes a complete measurement when testing, in addition to speed, the parameters of packet loss (percentage of messages sent over the network that do not reach the destination), latency or RTT (round trip time – measure of time for a message to go to a destination and return), and jitter (variation of the delay in the sequential transmission of messages).

Packet loss, latency, jitter are parameters measured by SIMET from Chrome, and users can also use the browser on Android devices, such as tablets and cell phones, in addition to the computer, to test the performance of the connection.

According to Milton Kashiwakura, Director of Special Projects and Development at NIC.br, users should be aware of the speed of their network traffic, as the loss of packets implies a major degradation of the service, especially at peak times.

The new version of SIMET also includes the Internet Quality Map (simet-publico.ceptro.br/simet-maps), a resource that lists access providers that operate in the country, as well as the results of previous evaluations.

Since SIMET is a collaborative system that provides data to users, this resource structures a geospatial framework with the situation of the network. "Before hiring an Internet connection service," says Milton, "users can consult the Map to check companies that operate in their region and can also compare operators' performance".
