Designer of the first Macintosh icons confuses Samsung phone with iPhone

Icon - Happy Mac by Susan Kare

The judgment between Apple and Samsung continues. After Peter Bressler’s testimony, it was time for Susan Kare speak in front of the judges. The designer – who created the famous “Happy Mac” icon, as well as many others present on the first Macintosh – spoke about the similarities between the icons of the iPhone and Samsung phones.

Kare compared the icons in the 305 ′ icon layout patent (image) – which illustrates the Home Screen of the first iPhone – with the icons of several Samsung smartphones, showing slides for the entire court. According to her, the general impression is that the Android application screen is similar to the 305 ′ patent. Among the devices the designer has analyzed are Galaxy S 4G, Gem, Droid Charge and Captivate. Kare also told about when she got confused herself:

I remember when I was at the law firm. […] There was a big table with several cell phones on top … I could see the screen and I took the iPhone to show a detail on the interface, and I was holding a Samsung cell phone.

A simple coincidence. ?

During her testimony, Kare tried to explain that she works by creating designs that differ from other similar products, and pointed to the BlackBerry Torch interface as an example of an interface that differs from the 305 ′ patent.

At the end of her testimony, she concluded that, after comparing cell by cell, the similarities do not seem to be simple coincidences. “It seems likely to me that Samsung used the graphics on the iPhone screen as a guide,” he said.
