Decision on .xxx postponed

ICANN postponed the decision on the creation of the .xxx top-level domain.

The body responsible for managing the Internet brought the matter up for discussion at the meeting held in Kenya, as planned, but only to establish a new deadline for taking a position.

According to the Associated Press, the organization wants its team to review the original proposal and recommend new options in the next two weeks.

After the new ideas are presented, they will be subject to public consultation for 45 days.

ICANN’s board of directors says it will vote on the proposal at its next meeting, scheduled for late June in Brussels.

The proposal for the creation of an Internet suffix that hosts sites with adult content was first presented in 2000, and was eventually rejected in 2007, at a meeting of the body responsible for the management of Internet domains that took place in Lisbon.

The negative votes of three years ago were mainly related to fears that ICANN would become «a content police» to see the obligations to which these types of sites would be subject, the Associated Press said at the time.
