Death to answer phone leads PT to pay 330 thousand euros

In 2001, a 29-year-old woman died answering a telephone call on the fixed network, when lifting the handset she was hit by an electrical shock of 15 thousand volts.

The cause of the situation was the fact that the cable connecting the victim’s home phone was broken and wrapped around an EDP high voltage cable, located in the same location.

Eight years after the accident, the case ends in court, through the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice, which orders Portugal Telecom to pay compensation of 330 thousand euros to the victim’s family, who lived in Palmela.

PT is condemned as a concessionaire of the public telecommunications service, with obligations to maintain the good condition of the basic network.

In the judgment of the court it is also explained that a technician from Portugal Telecom had on the morning of the accident spent at the site for inspection, without detecting any anomaly, as reported by the DiÔrio Económico.
