From today and until the 6th of December the second edition of the Portuguese CyberMonday takes place. The first edition of this discount initiative created in the United States took place last year and, with a new organization, returns this year to the scene.
As TeK said a few weeks ago, the price comparison site KuantoKusta, which last year organized the first CyberMonday, this year ensured that it would not do it again due to lack of market accession.
The company’s marketing manager explained to TeK at the time that some contacts were still made to resume the initiative in 2010, but the company ended up not moving forward, realizing that the conditions that tenants were willing to ensure would not be very different from those promoted last year.
However, the Portuguese CyberMonday starts today, now with the organization of ecoupons.com, a company specializing in discounted electronic commerce. On the official website it is explained that the organization intends to take this American tradition of discounted shopping to anticipate Christmas outside the United States. In this sense, it is promoting a first effort in some European countries, Portugal included.
The idea is to provide calls to local and international stores (that deliver to Portugal) that are offering discounts at their online stores. In the meantime, TeK contacted ecoupons.com to understand the criteria for selecting local stores that appear on the list presented on the website. In the respective addresses there is no reference to the initiative, nor special discounts in cash (with the exception of Christmas campaigns). In the case of Apple, for example, the recommended promotion is free postage for purchases over 121 euros, the usual practice of the store.
Via email, the founder of ecoupons.com explains: «we are negotiating with stores to have CyberMonday sales as in the United States», details Matthew Cheng, adding that all the brands listed are already running campaigns at this moment (in most cases allusive Christmas).
With regard to expectations regarding this Portuguese CyberMonday, the company believes that joining the initiative «will grow slowly at the beginning».
«This is only the second year of promotion of CyberMonday in Portugal. In the United States, it was also several years before retailers started to adopt this sales practice», defends the head of ecoupons.com.
TeK also contacted KuantoKusta, which has a new Christmas discount campaign, the Christmas Guide. The company confirmed that it no longer owns the domain that hosts CyberMonday and that this new edition does not pass by itself.
