The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will promote a workshop on cyber law, addressed to the member states of the Asociacion Latinamericana de Integracion (ALADI).
With the meeting, which starts today and runs until 10 October, the Organization wants to show the economic benefits arising from the digital business and promote the adoption of a harmonized legal framework for the area of electronic commerce in that region.
THE workshop expects 25 participants from nine countries that are part of ALADI and will address various legal issues and consider options for harmonization and legislative reform.
The discussion sessions will also include a comparative review of existing laws in the region.
UNCTAD argues that the adoption of an effective legal framework for the Internet area is currently extremely important for the Latin American region.
A study conducted by the Argentine National Institute of Statistics shows that 96 percent of companies linked to production already use the Internet. The rate of Internet penetration in ALADI countries has grown from five per cent in 2000 to 20 per cent in 2007.
The study also reports that the governments of these countries are currently developing policies in order to take advantage of the economic potential of Information and Communication Technologies.
