Create Web Apps easily with ICE on Ubuntu and Linux Mint

Diolinux

I’m a big fan of WebApps, I use several! And for that I use Google Chrome normally, it has a native function for that, however, there is another way to make applications from the sites that you like to access and use another browser too, like Firefox, all thanks to ICE, check out :

ICE is an application that comes from a Linux distribution called Peppermint OS, we made a video about it recently and showed the ICE in operation, see:

Did you like the video? How about you don’t miss any more that is released? Just subscribe to our channel, it’s free and there’s video every day on YouTube! ?

As Peppermint OS is based on Ubuntu / Mint, its packages are also compatible, just download the package .deb or use the official repository. It is possible to install on Ubuntu 16.04 or Linux Mint 18 through PPA:

ppa:peppermintos/p7-release

Don’t know what to do with this PPA? Then see:

– How to add a PPA on Ubuntu from the terminal

– How to add a PPA in Ubuntu via graphical interface

– How to remove a program installed via PPA

If you prefer to use the terminal to install ICE, just run this command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peppermintos/p7-release - y && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ice

Wait for the process and with that the ICE will already be available in the system menu.

Installing with “two clicks”

As I mentioned, ICE is available in packages .deb also, in this way it is only possible to download the file and install it by double clicking on it, the program will open with the Program Center or Gdebi, just click on “Install”, enter the password and wait. Download the ICE in the format .deb on the button below:

There is only a 64-bit version

Using ICE to create WebApps

In the video above you could already get an idea of how the application works, but let’s give you an example to help you understand it better.

Let’s say you wanted to create a Diolinux WebApp so that you can easily access the blog, look for ICE in your system’s menu, in the first tab of the program you will enter the information of the website you want to create a WebApp.

ICE Linux

1 – This will be the name of your WebApp.

2 – Here you type the URL of the website you want to create the WebApp.

3 – Select the category from the menu where your WebApp will appear, the default is “Internet”.

4 – Here you can select an icon to represent your WebApp.

5 – If you don’t have an icon, this option will “pull” the Favicon from the website to create the program’s icon.

6 – In this region you will choose which of these three browsers the WebApp will open.

In the “Remove” tab, as the name suggests, you can easily remove WebApps that you create.
