On the 15th of November, the results of the ViaBio study – Biotechnology and Innovation in Portuguese Industry – Technological and Market Opportunities will be presented at the Fundação Luso Americana. The results of the analysis demonstrate that biotechnology may increase the productivity and competitiveness of several sectors of the national industry.

Promoted by COTEC Portugal in partnership with the Fundação Luso Americana para o Desenvolvimento, the study covered five sectors of the Portuguese economy, namely, food and beverages, environment, energy, forestry and textiles.

For the development of the project, nearly three hundred ongoing works, both national and international, were analyzed on biotechnological research and development and the appetite of the national industrial fabric for its application. The analysis revealed potential in the sector that can be used by companies, based on skills, knowledge and technologies that are not necessary in institutions of the national scientific system. Among the areas that stood out for their potential include the sectors of functional food and textiles, biomonitoring of the environment, among others.

There were also some gaps in terms of the organization of academic research and its capacity to respond to socio-economic needs, as well as some limitations with regard to the industry’s capacity and motivation to invest in «cutting-edge topics» and in use of biotechnological innovation «as a competitive differentiation tool», says COTEC.

The study also had the support of companies such as EDP, Efacec, GALP Energia, Amorim Group, Portucel-Soporcel Group, Lameirinho, Têxtil Manuel Gonçalves and Unicer and was developed by a team from the IN + Center of the Instituto Superior Técnico.
