(Updated) The Safe Internet site is now available, an initiative co-financed by the European Union that provides information for safer use of the Internet, designed for the general public.

Internet Segura is also a platform for receiving complaints for illegal or offensive Internet content, namely related to child pornography, and will work in coordination with a telephone line – Linha Alerta – which will receive the same type of complaints.

Complaints received via the telephone line or the website are forwarded to the authorities and subsequently investigated. The project is the fulfillment of an intention announced on February 6, 2007, on Safe Internet Day.

Internet Segura will be formally presented on July 5th at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing. The initiative is the responsibility of a consortium coordinated by UMIC – Knowledge Society Agency, which also involves the General Directorate of Innovation and Curricular Development of the Ministry of Education, FCCN and Microsoft Portugal and benefited from community funding under the Safer program Internet Plus.

Tito Morais, founder of the website MiudosSegurosNa.Net reacted to the launch of the new Portuguese website and hotline to increase Internet security, congratulating himself and saying that Portugal becomes «the 22nd country of the 27 members of the European Union to have a hotline», which, in the opinion of the responsible, shows some delay in the implementation of a project with these characteristics.

«Unfortunately, harmful content remains to be dealt with, such as those related to cyberbullying, among others, which are of great concern to many families, schools and communities in Portugal today», adds Tito Morais in a statement.
