Competitiveness Council approves investments above € 5 billion in S&T

Counting on the presidency of the Portuguese minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago, the Competitiveness Council, dedicated to the Research area, yesterday approved European investments for R&D in Europe, as well as the strategy for this sector. Together with the European Parliament regulated the new European Institute of Innovation and Technology, a new organization networked with European universities and industries.

An agreement prepared by the Portuguese Presidency defined the launch of the first strategic public-private partnerships, between the States, the European Commission and Industry, in the amount of 5,340 million euros, half of which are community funds.

Strategic research initiatives defined developments in nanoelectronics, in the ENIAC program, in computer systems embedded in other products, with Artemis, innovative medicines (IMI) and aeronautics with environmental concerns (Clear Sky) as paramount.

The European initiative AAL was also approved – for the development of new applications of information technologies to improve the quality of life of the elderly.
