The competition for the reinforcement of the computer park for the 2nd and 3rd cycle schools launched by the Ministry of Education ends today the phase of receiving applications, and should receive proposals from a dozen companies, said the Jornal de Negócios.
The contest will give rise to one of the largest desktop computer sales contracts for 2008, which justifies the interest of companies that can thus place on the market more than 111 thousand PCs.
The procedure was launched by the Ministry of Education in April and has a budget of 70 million euros, involving not only the supply of equipment but also its maintenance. Due to its dimension, this is an international competition.
The reinforcement of the schools’ computer park is one of the measures of the Technological Plan for Education and aims to boost teaching and learning by making one computer available for every five students in the schools covered by the program.
If the goal is reached, Portugal will be in the group of European countries with the highest level of development in this field and the numbers observed in the 2005/2006 academic year will drop to less than half. According to that year’s ratios, each computer was shared by an average of eleven students.
