Comparative table between iPhone XS, XR and X

What are the changes in the new iPhones? What is better about the 10S than the 10R? And in relation to the iPhone 10, what has changed?

These are questions that many people ask themselves, which is why the iPhone Blog decided to put all the information in a comparative table, for you to evaluate all the characteristics side by side.

In this article, we take the liberty of lovingly calling the XS and XR iPhones 10S and 10R, which is how Apple wants us to pronounce it. Since she decided to make this alphabet soup between Roman numerals and Western letters, it was the way we found to get everyone used to the correct way to call the new devices. ?

It is important to note that this year Apple did not put different features in the larger version of the device, as it did with the ‘Plus’ models. The two sizes of the 10S have differentiation only in the dimensions of the screen, battery and housing, everything else is the same.

Difference in screens

One of the biggest differences between the 10S and the 10R is its screen. The most expensive model is made of OLED, while the second LCD classic, but according to Apple “is the most advanced in the industry, with a new backlight design that makes it possible to enlarge the screen to the edge, following the curvature of the corners“.

If you put the two side by side you will probably notice a difference between them, especially when it comes to contrast. But it promises to be better than the iPhone 8 screen, so if you are used to using any iPhone prior to X, you will feel an evolution.

The 1792 × 828 pixel resolution of the iPhone 10R is lower than that of Full HD videos, which has already caused many to complain even without having yet taken the device in hand. The iPhone 8 also has a lower resolution and no one has ever pointed this out as a reason not to buy the device, so for the vast majority of users, it won’t make any difference. None at all.

Detail: both the 10R and 10S Max will present the two-column view when the device has the screen horizontally, as always with the models Plus. This was not applied to the iPhone 10 last year or the current 10S.

Design

After fixing to make devices increasingly thinner, it seems that Apple is following the opposite path, and with each generation, they are getting thicker again. The 10R is thicker than the iPhone 10S / 10.

The good news is that the iPhone 10S (XS) has exactly the same measurements as the iPhone 10 (X). With that, all the covers made for last year’s model will fit perfectly on the new device. The only small difference in design is that the bottom of the device is no longer symmetrical. Three extra holes in the microphone (which were fake, were useless for anything but aesthetics) disappeared and next to the place Apple put an antenna.

The outer frame of the two models is also made of different materials. While the 10S is still made of stainless steel (like the iPhone 10), the 10R is made of aluminum aerospace.

The back of both is made of glass, but it looks like Apple used a different material for each model. On the product pages, she emphasizes that the most resistant glass is present only in the front of the 10R, not in the rear, like the 10S.

Another difference between the two models is that it can be noted that the edges of the 10R’s screen are slightly thicker than 10S and 10S Max. Apple has already explained that making an LCD screen with smaller, curved edges is a much more complicated challenge than with OLED screens. So this was probably the thinnest edge the apple was able to make on that canvas.

iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR

Dual SIM

How beautiful, the iPhone finally accepts two chips! But take it easy, because it should take a while for this function to be available to Brazilians and Portuguese. The device accepts only one physical chip and the other is embedded inside (eSIM) and to be activated, it depends exclusively on a compatible operator. In Brazil, we know that only clear is working with this technology as it supports the mobile version of the Apple Watch. Which does not mean that it will release right away for new iPhones. It all depends on the agreements you make with Apple.

In general, operators (from all over the world) do everything so that the devices do not accept two chips at the same time and are not compatible with eSIM (read: “Operators do not want the cell phone chip to evolve“). For them, the customer should be locked up in the same company forever, with the cell phone blocked, paying the same bill forever. So the idea of using another competitor’s chip at the same time, with lower prices, is chaos! The president of VIVO himself has already called WhatsApp “pure piracy“, why dare allow free calls without going through the operator.

So, although the new iPhones are compatible with Dual SIM (both 10S and 10R), we still don’t know when we can use this benefit. But who knows, with this pressure from Apple, they won’t budge a little?

Cameras

The rear camera of the 10S has gained qualitative improvements over that of the 10. Despite offering the same number of megapixels, the larger and faster sensors allow for greater image enhancement. This is reflected in better images in low light environments, more moving pictures and intelligent HDR, with more details in the shadows.

The new generation Neural Engine allows faces to be identified more quickly, improving Portrait mode with more accurate facial mapping. And since the wide-angle camera is the same on the 10S and 10R models, all of these improvements are present in both.

In short: the 10R has the same rear camera as the 10S, it just doesn’t have the second telephoto lens.

Water resistance

The iPhone is already resistant to occasional dives, splashes and rain since the iPhone 7. Even some tests have shown that it is much more resistant to diving than its competitors. All models released after the iPhone 7 continued to be certified IP67 (Water resistance at a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes), but the 10S has been upgraded to that. He brings the certificate IP68, which is a little better withstanding the stride with 1 meter more depth.

In short: if you are thrown into the pool with him, or if the appliance falls into the toilet, the water will not damage the appliance.

This was our comparison, to help you choose which model best fits your needs (or to eventually decide that it is not worth changing the device you already own). There are some other questions regarding the new devices in this other article.
