The European Commission requested that all member states should accelerate the transition from analogue to digital television by 2010. Of the 13 states that already have a fixed date for the adoption of digital television, six other countries have chosen 2012 as the implementation deadline, but Portugal has not yet submitted a date for the process.

«When recommending 2012 as the last deadline to implement digital, I would like to send a political signal to all market participants and users that digital television is going to be a reality,» said Viviane Reding, Commissioner for the Information Society and Media, in a statement.

Digital television broadcasting guarantees high resolution image, better sound, better mobile reception, more television and radio channels and more information services, but viewers who have not yet purchased a digital receiver will have to do so in order to enjoy the technology. The commission expects digital television and additional services to contribute to a more competitive market among operators and to enable new interactive applications.

In a statement, the European Commission also warns that the faster this transition, the faster the analogue spectrum will become available to other operators. Remember that digital television only requires one third of the spectrum used by analogue.
