Microsoft and Cisco are moving forward this year with a first version of the interoperability program that will ensure communication between Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP) and Cisco Network Admission Control (NAC), a measure that aims to contribute to improving the security of systems and facilitate partner programming work.

Announced in 2004, the partnership between the two companies also aims at this stage to ensure that a network supported on Longhorn or Vista, and a user of Cisco network infrastructure, can use a single authentication system.

The first results of this work appear later this year, according to a whitepaper now published, but the program only opens to the world with the launch of Longhorn – a new version of Microsoft’s operating system for servers – in the second half of 2007.

According to The Register, which cites Microsoft, the whitepaper describes the architecture and details the plans for integrating the security capabilities built into the Cisco network infrastructure and the planned capabilities for Vista and Longhorn.
