Coldplay’s first single, placed for download free on the band’s website, it was downloaded by 600,000 fans in the first 24 hours after its availability. The song, Violet Hill, was accessible at 12.15 pm on Tuesday and after just twelve hours it had already been downloaded 300,000 times.

The single will be released in paid digital format next week, May 6th, while it will be available for download free and as the first sample of Coldplay’s new work, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, which will hit the market in June.

The pioneers in making music available for free on the Internet, Radiohead, have already stated that, despite the good results, they will not repeat the feat. This is because the strategy adopted was only «a response» to a concrete moment in the record industry through which they wanted to show that the Internet can be an ally of the sector.
