Cloudflare launches DNS 1.1.1.1 and promises more speed and privacy | Browsers

Cloudflare, specializing in network services and infrastructure, launched a new DNS server open to the world with promises of greater speed and privacy. With responses from 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, Cloudflare's DNS went live last Sunday (1). According to tests carried out by the company, the response times achieved were faster than other open servers of the type, such as Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and Cisco's OpenDNS. In short, a DNS server processes information between the computer and the websites accessed on the Internet.

Cloudflare claims that the DNS server reached 14.8 milliseconds (ms), which is significantly less than OpenDNS with 20.6 and Google's DNS with 34.7 ms. The goal, according to the company, is to provide the fastest existing server.

Regarding privacy, the promises are also interesting: Cloudflare guarantees to eliminate the records of each user every 24 hours and is committed to not collecting any type of navigation data. This information could be sold to third parties, such as telemarketing companies. In theory, the company could store all website addresses, as DNS servers are able to retain the content of each address sought by the network on the web.

The DNS is used to indicate the IP address of the websites that you try to access from the browser. On the Internet, the sites are located by IP and the DNS required to translate, for example, www.dnetc.com.br to "186.192.81.152", the actual address registered in the end.

In general, it is not necessary to choose a DNS server for the network. The ISP itself is responsible for carrying out transactions that convert the addresses of the websites visited to the IP addresses of each one.

However, the benefits of having a DNS server configured on your network may be noticeable. Higher performance and privacy are common examples and easily understood by those who need to use a personalized DNS to play on PlayStation 4, for example. The user can also configure DNS for Cloudflare or any other that he prefers, even in Windows 10.
