Claro confirms the implementation of 5G in Brazil simultaneously with the launch of Motorola Edge, the first smartphone to use the technology
For a long time it was speculated when the 5G would arrive in Brazil. That day has come. Simultaneously with the pre-launch of the first 5G smartphone in the country, the Motorola Edge (which is already reviewed on our website), clear announces the arrival of technology 5G DSS in your network, initiating this deployment through the frequencies already allocated to the Personal Mobile Service (SMP). With this, users will be able to access connections 12 times faster than conventional 4G.
This is possible due to the use of DSS technology (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, in its literal translation), in which Claro's 5G network will be able to distribute resources among current smartphones, which operate in previous generations, together with new ones, which they will start to be sold soon on Brazilian soil and which, moreover, will most likely be compatible with the 5G DSS network.
In the coming week, both Claro, Ericsson, Motorola and Qualcomm will also detail their plans to implement the new technology in Brazil, such as the initial coverage of the 5G DSS network and the beginning of sales of the first compatible device in the market. .
The arrival of the 5G DSS allows us to offer a first experience with the fifth generation of mobile networks, using everything we have invested and which is already available today. We have different conditions to offer the best experience now and this only reinforces our commitment to Brazil and to innovation. Despite the difficult times we are experiencing at the moment, we will continue to evolve and invest to always offer the best for our client.
Jos Flix, president of Claro
THE clear it was a pioneer in the commercialization of 3G in Brazil in 2007, of 4G in August 2012, and was also a pioneer in the launch of 4.5G in the country, in 2017. Now, it is also ahead in the commercial launch of the 5G DSS.
The 5G journey in Brazil
The arrival of 5G is in its first stagesIt is worth remembering that the arrival of 5G is in its first phase and that, over the next few weeks, Claro will design its entire action plan for the implementation of the technology in the Brazilian market. The first step is all investments made to implement the 5G DSS, at current frequencies. They will automatically accelerate the final deployment, with the subsequent addition of the 3.5 GHz spectrum and millimeter wave bands.
In addition to the regions that will be served in the initial deployment plan to be announced by Claro, the coverage of the 5G DSS will, as expected, gradually grow in the coming years. The additional spectrum, which will be auctioned by Anatel at a future date, will make it possible to expand the transmission capacity.
As it uses higher frequencies than those available on the market at the present time, the new spectrum bands allocated will require the implantation of a large number of antennas, to guarantee coverage and capacity. The higher the frequency, the shorter the range and the greater the need for signal transmission antennas.
Another necessary evolution in the infrastructure, in this case to reduce latency, will be the virtualization of network functions, with the decentralization of the core to data centers closer to the customers, a technology known as edge computing. The journey towards the final and expected solution of 5G, therefore, will be long and will still require a lot of investment, work and time for implementation across the country.
The evolution of 4.5G to 5G
4.5G will play a key role in the first steps of 5G in Brazil, as it will complement coverageAnother important and accelerating factor in the adoption of the 5G DSS is the recent incorporation of Nextel, an important contribution that makes it possible today for Claro to have the largest amount of spectrum allocated in the SMP, combining the spectrum acquired by each operator and respecting all limits established by Anatel.
With more spectrum and superior performance of the 4.5G network, Claro has unique conditions to share the network with the 5G DSS, guaranteeing more quality of experience and still counting on the 4.5G to complement the coverage where the 5G DSS is not yet available.
Years of work
The efforts are clear, from the past, since, since 2016, Claro has made the implementation of 5G a reality. In 2016, it demonstrated a pre-5G network, with 5.6 Gbps speed in the 15GHz frequency range. In 2017, it took the reality of the use of autonomous cars thanks to the low latency of the technology.
In 2018, for the first time in the country, it presented an Ultra-HD 8K video transmission on an experimental fifth generation network. Still in 2018, it was a pioneer when installing a 5G antenna in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, starting to collaborate with Anatel and transforming the Ilha do Fundo Research Center into the technology certification laboratory in Brazil.
At the end of 2019, the company was another technological milestone: it made Allianz Parque the first Brazilian stadium with technology. In the demonstration, for the first time Brazil saw a holographic broadcast in real time over the 5G network, which allowed Lucas Lima to take the stage of the Led Zeppelin In Concert show, with the Nova Orquestra, and make a presentation to the public.
