Who was Chiquinha Gonzaga?

Chiquinha Gonzaga's biography begins in Rio de Janeiro, 171 years ago. Francisca Edwiges Neves Gonzaga discovered her interest in music at a young age, at the age of 11, the age when she learned to play the piano. From then on, she struggled to become an independent musician, despite her parents' disapproval.

Black and granddaughter of freed slave, Chiquinha became involved in political issues, defending the end of the monarchy and the abolition of the enslaved. The composer even sold her own compositions to pay for the freedom of an enslaved musician known as Z Flute. His song "Abre Alas" was inspired by the desire for freedom of slaves.

Chiquinha Gonzaga was directly linked to the creation of choro, participating in song circles with other prominent musicians within this genre, such as Joaquim Antnio da Silva Callado. In addition to choro, he also composed successful operettas, such as Forrobod, which until today is one of the most successful pieces in Brazil of this type. Chiquinha was also a successful conductor, being the first woman in the country to conduct an orchestra.

The artist passed away at the age of 87, in February 1935, and her music is still popular with the Brazilian people. Chiquinha Gonzaga's extensive biography inspired the miniseries of the same name produced by Globo and broadcast in 1999. An exhibition of Chiquinha's works, and its importance for current music, is available on Google Arts & Culture.
