Chinese warn of Apple ID hijacking to steal money | Security

Thieves are hijacking user accounts for Apple devices, including the iPhone and iPad, to steal money from Chinese victims. The country's two largest digital payment platforms, Alipay and WeChat Pay, have made the announcement in recent days. The statement mentions Apple ID profiles in an Apple-critical tone, which would not be solving the problem even after being informed.

On this Tuesday (16), the technology giant from Cupertino admitted the failure and apologized for what happened. In the official statement, made in Chinese and translated by Wall Street Journal, the company claims that the fraud was carried out using a phishing scam and that it reached a small number of accounts.

Although Alipay and WeChat Pay brought the issue up, neither company had said what the scam was about. The posts made last week only instruct its users to take security measures if they used iOS, how to reduce the limits on financial transactions.

It was only with the official statement from Apple that the phishing scam was revealed. Using social engineering tactics, hackers managed to login to the victim and used the methods of payment linked to the account to make purchases in applications. The scam targeted not only Alipay and WeChat Pay systems, but all digital payment services and even credit cards.

According to the official news agency of the Chinese regime, some users have been robbed for up to 2,000 yuan, about R $ 1,070 at the current price of the currency. It is not yet known how many people are affected, but Apple guarantees that the number was small and located only between accounts without two-step authentication.
