A resident of Jiangxi province, southeastern China, Yuan San is an amateur actor who originally published short videos with skits on the platform. His decision to transmit himself asleep was taken with the purpose of checking whether he snored, which was done for the first time on February 9th.

Upon waking up, the Chinese found that more than 540,000 people had seen his channel in the past five hours. The peak of visualizations motivated him to repeat the feat, this time in a live of 12 hours. The channel managed to add 18.5 million viewers and almost a million followers. It was these two lives that launched Yuan San to stardom on the Internet and earned him almost R $ 50 thousand in virtual currency and more than R $ 18 thousand in real money.

Success, however, has not only brought good things. To the local portal 36Kr, the Douyin user said he received strange messages, including people who had made the proposal to live with him. He even made a live announcing that he no longer wants to stream himself asleep, which made his channel lose 40,000 fans immediately.

The hype surrounding Yuan San's nights of sleep can be more easily understood considering the context of the coronavirus outbreak. Millions of Chinese are currently locked up at home, with schools, cinemas and other public places closed until the epidemic is stopped.

As a result, the Douyin and Kuaishou apps have increased by approximately 42 million active users daily, according to the research institute Quest Mobile. Users are also spending more time on apps – 105 minutes a day, 34% more than in the same period last year.
