In Brazil, October 12th is a famous date for having a series of programs intended for children. The commemoration was instituted from decree 4,867 of November 5, 1924 (camara.leg.br), signed by President Arthur Bernardes and approved by the National Congress. The celebration of Children's Day was set a year earlier, during a congress that discussed the rights of children in Latin America. Interestingly, the commemorative day only became popular around 1960, when toy makers used the date commercially to make dolls and strollers promos.

It is worth remembering that the celebration of Brazil differs from the universal date created by the United Nations (UN), which establishes November 20 as World Children's Day. On this date, in 1959, the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child was approved. The purpose of the document is to ensure that all children enjoy a full childhood, free from exploitation and access to health, education and leisure, among other rights.

Children's Day honors theme on Google homepage year after year. In 2018, for example, the search giant exchanged its logo for a band of little children who play various musical instruments, such as drum, bugle and xylophone. In 2017, in turn, the company replaced the letters that make up the word Google with colorful birds, with the colors of the brand. Birds read, skipped rope, and had fun on a park swing, alluding to the most common offline play among children.

The principles of the UN Declaration include guaranteeing equality to all children in the world, without any kind of distinction, whether by nationality, race or religion. In addition, the Organization determines that children with physical or mental disabilities have special education and care.

Still according to the Declaration, all children must be protected against exploitation at work and abandonment. Finally, the document stresses that children must grow up in a spirit of justice, understanding, friendship and solidarity among peoples.

More than a date to deliver gifts, Children's Day is used by NGOs and government entities as a reminder of the importance of creating public policies aimed at children and combating practices such as child labor and sexual harassment.
