Canon EOS R5 is still a camera but fully embraces the video industry

Scott Antaya, vice president of Canon USA, hosted another digital conference, held without an audience, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the new products, the company advanced with more details about the Canon EOS R5, a model that the company unveiled in February. One of the new features of its professional mirrorless full frame camera is the ability to record video at 8K, a commitment that the company is committed to staying among the forefront of film cameras.

Based on the EOS R system, Canon reveals that the new version records images in internal RAW from 8K up to 29.97 FPS, highlighting its use in productions at the highest level. The company guarantees that this camera has characteristics seen in top cinematographic equipment, but at the price of a mirrorless.

Alternatively, you can record 4K quality video at 119.88 FPS, as well as output 4K images at 59.94 FPS via HDMI. All video modes, resolutions and frame rates benefit from Dual Pixel AF technology. The machine also has a double card slot: 1 CFexpress and 1 SD UHS-II.

According to Richard Shepherd, Canon's product marketing senior manager, this camera will offer video recording capabilities never seen in any other mirrorless camera. With its ability to record in formats and codecs within the standards of the film industry, the EOS R5 is the ideal main camera for many productions, but thanks to its compatibility with cinema workflows, it also easily records in the most sophisticated productions. Another new feature of the camera is the ability to recognize the faces of pets, such as dogs.

The camera features a 12 fps mechanical shutter and a 20 fps electronic shutter, which the manufacturer says is ideal for any type of photographers, whether those registering weddings or photographing wildlife. It should also be noted that the new EOS R5 is compatible with all Canon EF lenses already on the market, as well as RF-EF via adapters, similar to the previous model. However, it also introduced the new RF 24-105mm lens. During 2020, nine more objectives will be launched on the market.

Together with the camera, Canon had already unveiled a new cloud service, the image-canon, so that you can transfer the photos of the equipment, via built-in wifi, automatically to the user's account. Then you can edit online or transfer to your personal computer, says the company.
