But why the sudden change? For a fair reason: Bruce Sewell, current senior vice president and general counsel (has been in office since 2009), retiring at the end of the year.

Here is Tim Cook's statement:

We are excited to welcome Kate to our team. She is an experienced leader with excellent judgment and who has worked on a wide variety of legal cases globally. Throughout her career, she has also been an advocate for many of the values that Apple believes. He tirelessly defended our intellectual property, our customers' right to privacy and our values. Bruce has set a new standard for general counsel and I am proud to have worked with him and to call him a friend.

Adams also said:

Apple had a tremendous impact on the world and an honor to join the team. I am excited to help Apple continue to grow and evolve around the world, protecting its ideas and intellectual properties, and upholding our shared values.
