Trend Micro's report may indicate the return of Brazil as one of the countries most attacked by data hijacking malware. In 2017, at the height of the WannaCry crisis, the country ended up out of the ranking of the 10 countries most affected by ransomware. However, in the context of Latin America, Brazil led with more than half of ransomware attack detections in the period.
In 2018, Cry Brazil, a Brazilian ransomware that spread through phishing attacks, eventually gained prominence. Developed to particularly affect Brazilian users, the plague encrypted the hard drive and demanded ransom in digital currencies to return data access.
The Trend Micro survey also highlights Brazil among the top five most affected by email attacks. With over 2 billion cases detected, the country ranks third, behind only the United States and China, both in the range of 3 billion episodes.
Brazil is also among the 10 countries with the most malware detected. According to the survey, there are over 40 million virtual pests in action on devices with access to any Trend Micro security tool installed.
The developer also points out that the country is also among the markets with the largest volume of illegitimate apps designed to steal data. Present in the top 15, Brazil features over 55,000 malicious applications within a sample of over 6 million titles.
