Avid now offers a limited / free version of its Media Composer editing tool

If you work in the video editing business or are simply interested in the subject, but the bank account is not very suitable to engage in any of the high investments usually required by the segment's products, the Avid has excellent news for you.

Today, the giant of publishing solutions is launching, for macOS and Windows, a free version of its internationally renowned software among assemblers and other professionals in the field, the Media Composer. Baptized Avid Media Composer | First, the tool brings all the power of the MediaCentral platform and an interface very similar to that of the complete software, bringing, as expected, some basic limitations.

Avid Media Composer | First

First allows the user to work with four video channels and eight audio channels, offering a range of tools related to effects, transitions, color adjustment and cuts. Projects can be done in a maximum resolution of Full HD 1080p at 59.94 frames per second; the color space must be Rec.601 or Rec.709 (more modern standards, such as the DCI-P3 supported in new Apple products, are not included). Stereo sound support is included, but more complex standards, such as 5.1 or 7.1, were left out. Finally, after your artwork is ready, you can automatically share everything on YouTube, Facebook and / or Vimeo.

Specifically in the case of Macs, Avid states that the minimum specifications for running the tool are computers from 2012 onwards, running macOS 10.10 (Yosemite) or higher, with 8GB of RAM or more. To obtain Media Composer | First, just register on the producer website and download the corresponding management software.

Let us not be naive here: the initiative is nothing more than an advertising tool for users to know and be interested in Avid solutions, starting to spend (a lot) money on the company. Still, cool to see one of the biggest developers in the world releasing a free tool with their pedigree for the public that can be a hand in the wheel for many people.
