Introduced in June on PSP and the following month on GNR, the new license plate reading system has already helped to detect 521 stolen cars. The Automatic Police, as the Ministry of Internal Affairs calls it, operates in 17 vehicles.
The use of Policia Automático is possible thanks to agreements with insurance companies and automobile companies and, according to the supervisory minister, Rui Pereira, it has proved to be a useful tool in combating phenomena such as carjacking.
The extension of the use of the system to a larger number of vehicles is foreseen, guarantees the person in charge, who also gave figures on the costs of installing the system in each vehicle. Approximately 11 thousand euros, according to the media that were present at the assessment ceremony.
