Complaints about the functioning of the Portal das Matrulas, where guardians had to enroll their students for the school and teaching cycle to attend the next school year, have multiplied in recent days. Problems in accessing the site, and in the registration process itself, in terms of functioning, were publicly criticized, leading to the extension of the registration deadlines.
The Government would eventually decide to change the process and proceed with automatic enrollment for most students, admitting the existence of failures and computer attacks. "In addition to the flow of accesses, associated with pages connected to the Portal das Matrulas, which were below, there were highly complex computer attacks, which are being monitored by the National Cyber ??Security Center, which caused serious blockages in the system", he said. the Government statement.
In a written response to SAPO TEK, the CNCS (National Center for Cybersecurity) confirms that "on July 6, between 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm, the Portal das Matrulas was the target of an attack of the type Distributed Service Denial (DDoS)". This type of attacks is done through the massive sending of requests for access to servers, "clogging" the system and preventing legitimate users from being able to use the site.
The center, which is responsible for operational coordination and the national authority specializing in cybersecurity with state entities, says that "during the attack several moments were identified with peaks of around 1Gbps, which consequently made the service unavailable".
There is no longer any knowledge or suspicion that the integrity or confidentiality of the Portal das Matrulas computer systems may have been compromised, meaning that hackers will not have been able to access data from users, enrollments or schools that have been registered. in the system, but the investigation will continue, also to identify the source of the attacks.
"The work of analyzing this incident continues between CNCS / CERT.PT, FCT / FCCN (RCTS CERT) and the Ministry of Education in order to identify the source of the attack and promote measures to prevent and mitigate future events", he says the same source in response to SAPO TEK.
As a result of the problems, the Government decided to proceed with the automatic renewal of enrollments for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th years. The exception is the transfer of the educational establishment, and registrations in the 5th, 7th and 10th year, which mark changes in the cycle, which continue to be made on the portal. Schools are also instructed to receive enrollment from students.
