At 30, FileMaker Pro comes to version 14 full of news

In a world where ordinary users tend to organize part of their day-to-day lives in personal spreadsheets whether in the cloud, or not, and corporate users are heavily dependent on systems of the most diverse flavors made with any technology imaginable (and I really mean any technology), few are those who see value in personal database solutions.

here that Office Access and the products of FileMakerBut, unlike Microsoft's suite, which today appears as a secondary purchase option, Apple's subsidiary has remained independent since the 1980s, keeping a very interesting solution within reach of Mac users.

O FileMaker Pro 14 arrives on the market almost coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the product, already well-known for its flexibility in housing from personal organization solutions to very robust small business applications, capable of running on desktops (Mac or Windows), on the web or on iPhones and iPads, natively. We had the opportunity to evaluate the product in the last few days, and we really liked our first impressions.

In this release, all the major aspects of design and development of database solutions have been revised, making the product much better for both everyday use (especially on Apple products) and to create additional functionality. According to the company, even laypeople on schedule can make great products for everyday use, and put them into production in a variety of ways through FileMaker Server, their own solution for private network availability.

New interface and integrations

FileMaker Pro 14

Version 13 of FileMaker Pro was already compatible with iOS 7 and 8, but there was a lack of layout and design tools that would allow the creation of files better adapted to the new Apple interface, launched in 2013. In version 14, both shortcomings over 140 graphic icons have been remedied and included to give life to their own business products.

On Mac, projects can have visual interfaces adapted for desktop, smartphones and tablets, which can take advantage of specific guidelines on iPhones and iPads. In addition, developers for the platform can create interfaces that support rich text formatting on iOS and access to the media player, allowing video training materials to accompany solutions created for mobile devices.

Even the most detailed aspects of how apps for iOS 8 are designed can be considered: for example, navigation buttons can now only contain highlighted text and can be organized into toolbars. These, in addition to other controls and widgets, can be freely positioned in the new navigation elements allowing the user interfaces to gain greater freedom of interactions than the traditional model of forms and reports, found on other database platforms.

In OS X Yosemite, the FileMaker Pro 14 interface is inspired by the new visual language, icons and navigation controls. However, full screen support and some other visual aspects of OS X found in the latest versions are still lacking. In addition, access to photos and multimedia from Photos for Mac, recently released, still needs improvement.

Script Workspace

FileMaker Pro 14

For those who develop around the FileMaker platform, this is perhaps the biggest news. at first glance it doesn't seem like much: it was possible to automate database operations in the past, but with FileMaker Pro 14 this function has gained greater flexibility and a new area within the application on the Mac. In addition to consolidating creation, editing and visualization of scripts in a single window, users can now venture directly into code if they want to escape working with pre-programmed blocks of limited granularity.

Script Workspace can be used to work on multiple routines at once and offers language support functions, such as auto-completion and shortcuts, taking the face of a code editor for the context of FileMaker Pro. H contextual help and several facilities for those who are not so experienced with code and do not want to give up on the facilities that the application offers visually, but offering automation for any type of client is the focus of the developers with this new functionality.

Launch Center

FileMaker Pro 14

On both iOS (via FileMaker Go 14) and Mac, users now have the Launch Center, a centralized location for accessing solutions created locally or available on remote resources on their local network. FileMaker also offers partners that host solutions based on their Server version on the internet as an option, enriching customers' experience beyond what they can host locally.

As the Six Colorshowever, a service is needed where users can host their own databases. As much as the product's scope is not so open, it is still difficult to have access to solutions between Mac and iOS without the FileMaker Pro user taking care of the hosting itself.

Even bringing significant performance improvements to features such as WebDirect, which allows access to solutions via the browser from any device, they are somewhat overshadowed by the lack of ease in configuring hosting for end users. It is a point to be explored in the future, aiming to guarantee the popularization of a product that, on the functional and technical side, keeps improving.
